Utility Worker I

The Utility Worker I position reports to the assigned Crew Leader or through the chain of command to the Utilities Department. Under supervision performs a variety of work in the general maintenance of water and natural gas utilities. The majority of the work is performed as a member of a crew, although specific individuals' assignments of a more limited nature may be performed. Performs light to heavy manual labor and/or unskilled to semi-skilled tasks to assist with installation and repairs of utilities. Performs a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of the utilities system, including mains, services, valves, meters, hydrants, pressure regulators, and all other related equipment and devices. Locates and performs preventative and corrective maintenance on infrastructure. Assists in installing and setting up traffic control measures to maintain a safe work site.

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Performs light to heavy manual labor and/or unskilled to semi-skilled tasks to assist with installation and repairs of utilities.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of the utilities system, including mains, services, valves, meters, hydrants, pressure regulators, and all other related equipment and devices.
  • Locates and performs preventative and corrective maintenance on infrastructure.
  • Assists in installing and setting up traffic control measures to maintain a safe work site.
  • Digs ditches, trenches, and potholes; loads dirt and construction materials.
  • Cuts grass and weeds; rakes and loads grass and brush; and cleans area around utilities.
  •  Cleans and maintains basic tools used on the job.
  • Performs minor repairs on tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Performs minor building maintenance, cleaning, and custodial duties as assigned.
  • Assists with asphalt patching and repairing streets.
  • Operates and maintains City vehicles.
  • Participates in street cleaning operations.
  • Participates in special City events as required.
  • Responds to after hour’s emergencies.
  • Works with other departments as assigned.
  • Works with various chemicals and/or materials.
  • Observes safe-working practices, notifies supervisor of the need for equipment repair or maintenance; corrects or reports any safety concerns or fire hazards.
  • Follows and promotes Policy & Procedures of the City of Winder
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Georgia Driver's License and maintain valid license and good driving record.

Qualifications:

  •  High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Six (6) months of general or specialized construction or water and gas utilities experience.
  • Work standby and overtime as required or scheduled (evenings, weekends and/ or holidays, if necessary).
  • No felony convictions within the prior ten (10) years or while employed in the position.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or has obtain legal work status.
  • Must pass as detailed background investigation.
