Building Official

Under supervision of the Assistant City Administrator, the Building Official will inspect new construction and repair or renovation to existing construction of building and structures and oversees the issuance of building permits. To perform inspections of buildings, remodeling/construction work, and building codes and   to ensure health, safety, and welfare of the public. May hire, train, and oversee building inspectors. May oversee the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of building inspector staff in the department. Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations. 

Essential Duties and Functions: 

  • Conducts field inspections of residential and commercial construction sites and structures to ensure compliance with City, state and federal codes, ordinances, and regulations; maintains inspections records. 
  • Investigates possible violations of the Building Codes; sees that all violations are corrected or cited as necessary. 
  • Provides data for computer files for building, occupancy type, area, height, and the associated structural appurtenances, and listing of permits issued. 
  • Inspects existing buildings in conjunction with commercial occupational business licensing to ensure building codes are maintained. 
  • Reviews plans and construction documents for permit and license applications.
  • Interprets codes and ordinances for contractors and property owners; answers questions related to building construction, codes, and regulations. 
  • Serves on the City's Development Team. 
  • Inspects unsafe buildings to include those that are burned or abandoned and recommends abatement procedures if appropriate. 
  • Issues warnings or stop work orders from non-compliant construction. 
  • Attends and participates in meetings regarding assigned site locations and projects. 
  • Serves as city facilities management along with Public Works. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Requires a valid State of Georgia Driver's License and the possession of or ability to readily obtain driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. 
  • Strong preference of ICC Certification as a Certified Building Official (CBO) and/or must demonstrate the process of getting the certification and must obtain it within 6 months of employment. 
  • Combination Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector preferred. Secondary certifications include Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing ICC Certifications. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree is desired in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work, be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service. 
  • Never been convicted of a felony. 
  • A citizen of the United States or has obtained legal work status. 
  • Must pass a detailed background investigation. 
  • Work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required. 
  • Must be able to pass a credit check.
